Workgroup sessions are an integral part of the Open Source CubeSat Workshop. A workgroup is composed of a number of people that discuss about a topic that in some form relates to the theme of the workshop. The outcome of a workgroup is typically a short report.

Below is the list of proposed workgroup topics. Please contact us to submit more topics. There is also the option to propose ad-hoc workgroups during the workshop, if there is time and interest.

Python for Space Applications

Moderator: Juan Luis Cano (hello at juanlu.space)

Description: Python is a rich ecosystem covering libraries and tools for web development, data science, machine learning, physics modelling, and much more. With the porting of Python 3.4 to ARM microprocessors and even ESA LEON processors (Micropython), one can now do embedded programming with Python language. This workgroup is to identify which aspects of a typical CubeSat space mission Python can be used for and which parts are still missing (such as simulation toolboxes).

Open Source Software Baseline for Space Missions

Moderator: Luc Maisonobe (luc.maisonobe at c-s.fr)

Description: One thing is to make your CubeSat mission designs available as open source, but if those are files produced with a proprietary software (such as CATIA, Matlab, etc.) then it is still very restricted to a small audience that can afford such tools. In order to really let everyone participate in space exploration, the tools for design, build, and operation of a CubeSat mission should be completely open source as well. So let's talk on what open source tools are there and what your experience is with those.

LibreCube Board Specification

Moderator: Artur Scholz (artur.scholz at librecube.net)

Description: The CubeSat program is so popular because it is based on a standardized format that makes it fit into any CubeSat deployer. But what about the internals of a CubeSat, the electronic boards? There exists no formal specification, but only design heritage and de-facto standards. For the LibreCube ecosystem we want to define a specification for the mechanical, electrical and software interfacing, staying compatible to existing boards where possible.

Online Coordination of Open Source Space Projects

Moderator: Julian Fernandez (julian.ismael.fernandez at gmail.com)

Description: Today, online communication is essential for every development team no matter how small or large. The question is, how to scale this to a large commnity composed of potentially dozens or hundreds of contributing people living in different timezones? How can we communicate in a transparent and efficient way? Online collaboration tools exists, that support open source developments. But what else needs to be tackled and thought of for people to get involved easily?

Satellite On-Board Artificial Intelligence

Moderator: Xabier Crespo Álvarez (xabi at crespum.eu)

Description: Computational resources are getting more powerful and efficient every day. This enables the usage of new tools in the onboard software, and one of them is artificial intelligence (AI). There are still some questions which remain open: how feasible is its implementation? Shall we train the algorithm onboard? What are the specific use cases? These and other questions are to be addressed.

Where Open Source Cubesat Missions Come Alive

Moderator: Pablo Ruiz Sánchez (pablo.ruiz.sanchez at esa.int)

Description: With the continous growth in open source tools it is now possible to launch a cubesat mission relying only on open source technology. The purpose of the workshop is to build a network of people that are interested to support end-to-end development of an open source cubesat science mission. The purpose is to reuse as much as possible the existing projects of the OSCW community to build the mission and trigger new developments if needed to accomplish mission success.
